The Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys Weather Overview
Weather-wise the Florida Keys breaks down as follows:
January to April – Perfect weather, bring your swimsuit and snorkel gear!
May to July – Okay, we’re getting a little hotter and humid now, be sure to stay hydrated.
August to October – Yikes! Hurricanes! With beautiful weather in between
November to December – Hurricane threat is gone and the first sign of snowbirds migrating south are seen.
Average temps in the Florida Keys range from 75 in January and peak at 90 in July and August. Lows are 62 and 79 for those same months. With those temperatures, you can see why the Florida Keys can be a vacation destination during any time of the year.
Days are usually sunny, but you need to be prepared for the occasional afternoon storm, especially during the summer months.
If you’re going strictly by weather and you want the absolute best weather that you can get in the Florida Keys, then plan your trip for December to April.

Hurricane season is officially from June 1st to November 30th with the most active months for the Florida Keys are mid-August to mid-October. If you make plans for to visit during hurricane season, you might want to look at investing in trip insurance and keep an eye on the weather leading up to your trip dates.
Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys for Perfect Weather: December – February
With highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s, you can’t ask for better weather. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? The only problem is that the word is out and people flock to the Keys to enjoy it. So, plan on things being a little more crowded, more expensive, and you’ll definitely need to make your reservations early.
The water around the islands is still relatively warm, so go ahead and don your snorkel gear and jump in. If you’re going to be scuba diving, you might want to put on a lightweight wetsuit.
The days are usually dry, so you don’t have to worry about your kayaking tour getting cancelled, and the seas are calm.
There are plenty of festivals during the winter. If you’re there in December, boat parades are a common sight. Santa Claus 5K runs are plentiful, and Christmas parades abound.
January and February are chock full of things to do. They have fly fishing tournaments, Florida Keys Celtic Festival, Florida Keys Seafood Festival, and Florida Keys Food and Wine Festival. Plus, regattas, 5Ks and triathlons and a group of other events.
Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys for Spending Time Outdoors: March – May
Now this is when the Keys are at their best. Highs in the 80s and cool evenings. Rain chances are still down, so you can plan on being outside all day without the threat of rain.
If you’re looking for a cheaper vacation this is an excellent time to hit the Florida Keys, crowds are starting to thin out, and accommodation prices are starting to fall. In March and April spring breaker’s will be showing up, so keep that in mind when you’re planning your trip.
The water temperature is perfect in the spring, so put a kayaking or snorkeling excursion on your to-do list. And the weather is perfect for an evening dinner at a waterfront tiki bar.
If you missed the Florida Keys Seafood Festival, you can cure your lack of seafood blues at the Islamorada Seafood and Art Festival or the Marathon Seafood Festival in March. The Key West St Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl is always fun.
April brings the Seven-Mile Bridge Run, Jimmy Buffet Day celebrations at Margaritaville, Key West Air Show, and of course the Conch Republic Independence Celebration on April 23rd I’m sure is on everybody’s calendar. If you’re looking for that sailfish to put above your fireplace, the Marathon Sailfish Tournament will help you out with that.
If you’re into Triathlons, then head to Key Largo in March for their rendition at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. In May you get dueling dolphin tournaments, with the Mother’s Day Dolphin Tournament and the Key West Dolphin Fishing Tournaments.
Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys for Travel Deals: June Through October
Crowds are usually down in the summer in the Florida Keys due to the heat and humidity, and hurricane season in the fall is always a concern. If that’s the sort of thing that doesn’t bother you then come on down. You’ll find bargains on lodging and less crowds mucking up the works.
Temps are in the upper 80s to low 90s with high humidity so pack plenty of lightweight clothing. The official start of hurricane season is June 1st, but the peak months for the Florida Keys are August and September.

The heat continues through September, in October the humidity drops, the rain chances dry out, the temps cool off, and it becomes extremely enjoyable.
Value Season Things To Do
The heat and threat of hurricanes don’t slow the fun down in the Florida Keys. The Pride celebrations last all month in June, along with various fishing tournaments.
July brings the Key West Mermaid Festival, multiple Fourth of July celebrations, Key Lime Festival, the quirky Underwater Music Festival, and multiple fishing tournaments through the month. If you’re a fan of Ernest Hemingway or you happen to look like him, join the Hemingway Days festivities.
In August you can get your fill of lobster at the Key West Lobster Fest, run, bike, and swim it off at the Key Largo Fall Triathlon, and then celebrate pride again at the Key West Tropical Heat events. Get your fill of rum at the Key West Rum Fest and then chase it with the Key West Brew Fest.
September pays tribute to Jimmy Buffet with the Just a Few Friends Festival in Key West. Get your exercise and fun in at the Parrots and Margaritas 5K run. Test your mettle with the Swim for the Alligator Lighthouse event, said to be one of the eight toughest swim challenges. If you make it through the Lighthouse swim, grab your SUP and paddle the grassy flats in Marathon.
October hosts the Fantasy Fest in Key West, two weeks of barely there costumes, parades, and fun.
Florida Keys and the Hurricane Season
While hurricanes don’t hit the Florida Keys every year, it’s always best to keep an eye on the weather if you have a trip planned between June and November. If you’re traveling between mid-August and October, you’ll probably want to look into trip insurance.
Storm surges, high winds, and torrential rain are all possible and can be terrifying if you’re in it. Fortunately, hurricanes don’t just appear out of nowhere, there will be advance notice. If your visit is going to be in hurricane season, download one of the many weather apps and keep your eye on the weather. If it does get bad listen to officials and heed their warnings.
